Oldest Youth Soccer Club In Orange County

The Fullerton Rangers Soccer Club began in September 1963 when a group of men who wanted to play soccer organized a team and entered the Pacific Soccer League. The team selected the name “Fullerton Rangers” because several members of the team were Scottish and were devoted fans of the Rangers team from Glasgow, Scotland who played in the Scottish Premier League. Their home field was at Chapman Park.

In 1966, a youth team was added consisting of 8 to 14 year olds that played in the National Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) of Orange County. Our first youth team became the League Champions. A second youth team was added in 1967: Peewees (8 to 11 years old) and Intermediates (12 to 14 years old).   On January 20, 1968 the Club was incorporated in the state of California as a non-profit organization. In 1970, the youth teams started playing in the Pacific Soccer League Youth Group. The Club continued operating with two youth teams until 1972. In the period from 1972 to 1974, a slow growth began such that in 1974, seven youth teams and two adult teams were playing soccer.

In 1975, the 10th season with youth teams, the Fullerton Rangers Youth Soccer Club (FRYSC) was formed as a division of the Fullerton Rangers Soccer Club (FRSC). The Youth Club was managed by 12 Board of Directors which were elected at the year-end parents’ meeting (Annual General Meeting). In this season, the club was comprised of 20 teams; nine in a newly created league within the city of Fullerton called the Fullerton Soccer League (FSL); and the remainder of the youth teams competed in the newly formed Coast Soccer League (CSL). The CSL had 60 teams from 15 cities and FRYSC was the largest club in the CSL.

For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the Club. The Club continued to grow steadily. In 1977, there were 90 teams with 1250 players. The Club’s growth was further aided by our affiliation with the Junior United Soccer Association (JUSA) of Placentia. Five Northern Orange County cities (Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, Placentia and Yorba Linda) were represented within this Association. The Association included over 300 teams and over 4500 young soccer players. The FRYSC Board of Directors now consisted of 15 members whose duties were to set the policies of the Club, authorize all expenditures, and generally oversee the operations of the Club.

In 1978, the Club joined the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA). CYSA is the California branch of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) which is the governing body of all soccer in the United States. FRYSC had 120 teams and 1700 players.

In 1982, the Fullerton Rangers introduced our first girl’s CSL team. It was a team for girl’s under 16. Subsequently, more CSL girl’s teams were added. The FRYSC hosted the first Friendship Tournament on Labor Day weekend in 1983.

The men’s team is no longer in existence. However, one of the founding members manages a seniors team (50 years plus) called the Fullerton Rangers that play in the Sunset Soccer League.

In 1999, there were approximately 1650 players (ages 4 through 18) registered on 133 teams. There were 115 teams in Divisions 3 through 8, four teams in Divisions 1 & 2 playing inter-city, and 14 teams in age groups U-10 through U-18 playing in the Coast Soccer League (CSL).

In 2000, there were approximately 1900 players (ages 4 through 18) registered on 151 teams. There were 134 recreational teams in Divisions 3 through 8, six teams in Divisions 1 & 2 playing inter-city, and 11 teams in age groups U-10 through U-18 playing in the Coast Soccer League (CSL). The BU17 Rangers (coached by JB McCormack and John Alexander) finished the season as CYSA-S State Cup Champions!

In 2001, there were approximately 2000 players (ages 4 through 18) registered on 153 teams. There were 133 teams in Divisions 3 through 8, five teams in Divisions 1 & 2 playing inter-city, and 15 teams in age groups U-11 through U-18 playing in the Coast Soccer League (CSL).

In 2002, there were approximately 2200 players (ages 4 through 18) registered on 183 teams. There were 154 teams in Divisions 3 through 8, seven teams in Divisions 1 & 2 playing inter-city, and 16 teams in age groups U-11 through U-18 playing in the Coast Soccer League (CSL). In addition there was a new league created this year called the CYSA-S Signature League (CSSL) and the FRYSC had six teams participating in age groups U-10 through U-12.
